Attracting College Kids to your Bar

Posted on: September 27, 2016 by RMS Hospitality

The bar industry is a competitive one and without the right tools, it could just as easily become another statistic. While opening a bar in a college town may seem like a guaranteed ploy for success, a bar’s success depends on more than just stiff drinks and a fun atmosphere. Therefore, in addition to protecting your clients’ operation with a comprehensive Bar Insurance Program, share the following tips with them to promote their success.

Appeal to everyone.

Aside from just college kids, host themed nights on different days of the week to attract a variety of people. Try implementing college nights, sports nights, comedy club nights, dance party nights, etc. This will attract plenty of young bar goers and diversify the bar. Further, remind your clients not to forget to uphold quality and service standards to set themselves apart from their competition.

Calculated risk taking.

Including the 18-and over crowd for a certain night at the bar is actually incredibly lucrative. Granted, this requires more planning and risk management as the threat of underage drinking looms. However, when done correctly, it can drive even more interest in the bar. Bryan Kay, F&B director of Holiday Inn, Blacksburg, states “This means increased risk of underage drinking, so heightened awareness and security (including ten bouncers) is required, but the pay-off has been tremendous in actual patronage and retention of these ‘unders’ throughout their college careers.”

Think cheap.

Naturally, college kids don’t have a lot of money. Keep the prices for food and liquor cheap and they’ll sell like crazy. Cheap prices help college students justify spending money at your clients’ bar rather than on the laundry machines or other obligations. Have your clients get people in the door by marketing their deals!
