Live Music Venue Liabilities > Pros and Cons of Age Restrictions
As we discussed in a previous blog, there are various liabilities that these operators face on a regular basis. From insurance requirements to legal standpoints, there are a lot of regulations that need to be followed. While implementing an age restriction within the venue is up to the owner, there are some pros and cons to weigh before deciding. Share this information with your relative clients and ensure their operation is backed by a Live Music Venue Insurance Program.
Being a family-friendly venue has its perks and can allow the operation to host various types of artists and events. However, having young children around equipment, loud music, and swarms of people is a liability some venue owners don’t want to risk. In addition, young children tend to get rowdy at these types of events.
According to Spinditty, festivals and concerts usually require the attendee to be at least 18 years old because at this point they are all legally allowed to make their own decisions without parental consent. Anything they choose to do at the concert will be their own responsibility and nobody else’s. It’s smart from a company’s perspective because they avoid the possibility of someone underage getting hurt in any way, in which case a parent or guardian would have to be contacted which may in turn result in legal troubles. In turn, the venue’s liability is decreased because the concert goers are of legal age to make their own decisions.
Marketing and financial standpoints.
Depending on the target demographic, marketing efforts need to be tailored. If the venue is only targeting a small audience, the profit potential diminishes. In addition, only allowing patrons who are 21 and older is also an option and the venue can make more money by selling alcohol. However, while this might equate to a sold-out show, the risks of intoxicated guests can be a legal nightmare for venue operators.
Venue owners and operators can weigh the options, review financial reports and determine what the best sales and liability strategies are for their specific venue. Location, demographic, and audience play a huge role in deciding what type of age restrictions, if any, should apply to the venue.
